چکیده

-l. Significant levels of aryl acylamidase (E.C. 3.5.1:13) activity have been found in extracts of larvae of the webbing clothes moth, Tineola bisselliella using acetyl p-nitroanilide as substrate. 2. Gel electrophoresis suggests that the activity is due to more than one enzyme. Inhibitor studies show that these enzymes are probably of the "active serine" type but have a requirement for a free sulphydryl group. 3. Partially purified enzyme will not catalyse the hydrolysis of N-acetyl groups from some simple ~-N-acetyl or N-acetyl hexosamines.

The dietetics of the clothes moth, Tineola bisselliella Hum.

Much attention has been paid in the past to the peculiar mechanism of keratin digestion which enables the clothes moth to infest Woollen materials (Schulz, 1925 ; Liriderstrem-Lang & Duspiva, 1935 ; Duspiva, 1936), but little is known about its general food requirements. It is known that the larvae will not grow on clean wool (Titschak, 1922; Crowell & McCay, 1937) and that damage to clothing i...

Potentialities of Natural Dyestuffs as Antifeedants against Varied Carpet Beetle, Anthrenus verbasci

We studied damage to wool fabrics dyed with different natural and chemical dyestuffs by the larvae of varied carpet beetle, Anthrenus verbasci, as part of a study on the functions of natural dyestuffs. Eight of ten natural dyestuffs showed an antifeeding effect against A. verbasci. Strength of the antifeeding effect of natural dyestuffs in a feeding preference test was in the order lac dye, gal...
